The Different Poker Player Playing Styles
This is important to learn! So make sure you understand this…
These players are better known as fish. These are the new players who love to see every flop in hopes the catch some crazy hand, which they have very low odds of hitting. The Loose part means the player plays many, many hands, generally a very loose player has 35-40%+ to see the flop.
Passive part is because they seem just to call everything and not raise often, even on really good hands. Put the two together and you got a player that is going to lose a lot of money, be sure to be the one they are losing it to.
These players are better known as your maniacs at the poker table, and I try to avoid them because it’s like tossing up a coin when you play against them. They play 35-40% of their hands and are very aggressive. They will often not fold or call, but they end up raising people all the time.
Often I see these players make an all-in bluff when they have nothing. These players are scary to play against because it hurts when they actually hit their hand. So only go all-in verse these players when you are sure you have the nuts (the best hand possible).
These players are where many people fall once they understand the basics and a few advanced strategies in poker. Sadly many people do not get out of this category and most average intermediate players are in this category. They play tight which means they play only a select few good hands they receive, which ranges from 15-20% of their hands.
These people are usually very cautious players and are afraid to bet high because it would scare people away from the good hands they receive. So the end result is they call a lot and do a lot of small raises. Since they are cautious players they tend to get scared out of pots with high raises.
This is the category you want to be in, and where most pros consider themselves to be. It is by far the most profitable of all the categories, but it’s hard to become this type of player. It is important to only play strong hands, this way you increase your chances of winning big hands.
When you hit your big hands do not be afraid to make a decent sized bet, you want to be aggressive and keep those people drawing their hands out. This way statistically you are winning a lot more than you are losing.
It is true many people will fold before there is a lot of money in the pot due to this style of play, and you will feel that your great hand went to waste. Don’t feel bad though because people WILL call your big bets every once in a while and most of the time you will have them beat. This way over time you are always up on top as a winner, put yourself in situations where the statistics favor you and in the long run you will be rolling in cash.
*Note*- yes there are places that people play that are not in the categories above, like playing 30% of their hands, that just means they are between categories and have tendencies of both, so keep that in mind.
