How to Play Profitable Online Poker
Learning proper poker strategy is the first step in becoming a profitable poker player. Being the best player at the table will only get you so far. The way to profitable poker is choosing the right opponents to play against. You won’t make a large profit at a poker game full of tight players only playing their premium hands.
Finding the right opponents will take work on your part. You will have to do research to find a loose table with opponents that you can take advantage of. Start out in the lobby by looking at each table’s average pot size. The large the average the more likely there are loose opponents playing marginal hands.
Evaluate the Table
Once you have found a table that might be profitable don’t sit down right away and start playing. Take a few minutes to watch the betting patterns and card ranges of as many players as you can. This will give you an advantage when you do sit down at the table. You will have more information about your opponents than they will about you.
Also take notes on each player at the table, both to help while playing that table and in the future. If the online poker software does not have a function for note taking, keep a pen and paper next to you.
Take a Break
Playing for long hours can cause your mind to go soft. Being a profitable poker player is about always being sharp. You may not want to miss a hand because you’re afraid you’ll miss a pair of pocket aces, but when you find your mind slipping you need to take a break.
If you are playing for more than 5 hours, you should take the time to get up and eat a snack, lunch or dinner. The cards will still be there when you get back. You’ll be surprised how much a good meal can boost your game.
Leaving the Table
Leaving a table can be profitable as well. Playing with the same opponents to long can be a disadvantage. If you start to feel some other players, have caught on to your hand range and betting patterns it may be time to move on to a new table.
Always remember that being a profitable poker player is about finding opportunities to have the edge over your opponents, using drawing odds, pot odds or any other strategy will only get you so far. Try this advice, and you will start to see your profit rate go up.
