It’s the simple things that make the difference in poker. Only changing a few parts of your game can immensely improve your win rate. If you want to improve your game quickly read these five poker in-game tips…
Playing too many hands is the biggest mistakes that a new poker player can make. Of course being new to the game you want to play poker and folding hands seems a waste of time. Just because you play more doesn’t mean you’ll win more. Staying in hands just to be part of the action is a sure way to start losing your chips.
Choosing the Right Hands
If you are playing more than half your hands, STOP, and look at a starting hand chart and memorize it. Stick to the chart as a beginning player. The chart will make choosing the right hands to play second nature to you with only a little practice.
Playing too many hands can be fixed by playing premium starting hands. There are times you should play more hands, but this is for more advanced players.
Watch the Other Players at the Table
To be successful you not only need to pay attention to the cards and how you play; you also need to watch how your opponents play.
Look at what is happening on the table, what cards are opponents playing with and what are their betting patterns? This information is just as valuable as the cards in your hand and the odds of you improving them.
Pick the Right Limit to Play at
Starting out at the lower limits is important for new players for two reasons. First, there are better players in the higher limits, and as a beginner, you won’t be able to make mistakes and get away with them.
Second, depending on the size of your bankroll, playing at too high a limit can cause you to play scared. Playing the wrong limit will cause you to make a wrong decision either because you are afraid of losing money or you are trying to win it back.
Don’t ‘Quit when Ahead’
That title should be rephrased to “don’t quit just because your ahead”. The phrase is good advice for slot or blackjack players, but if your ahead and outplaying your opponents, you have an edge and leaving to soon could lose you a good profit.
Now if you know that the other players at the table have your hand selection and betting patterns down, and you don’t feel you can outplay them then get up and leave.
Poker is about having a positive exception that your decisions will result in profit as long as this is the case play as long as you can.
