Advantage of Position at the Poker Table
An understanding position is one of the most important things for any new poker player to learn. Other than the cards that you hold in your hand your position is one of the biggest factors in whether you win or lose. It can also influence your total profit. Taking a few minutes to learn about position can help improve your game right away.
Put simply position is where you are sitting at the table in relation to the dealer button. Players to the left of the dealer are the first to act and the button the last. This part is important because when playing close to the button you have more information than those further from it.
The small blind has the worst position after the flop where the button has the best position for any round of betting. Making sure always to know what position you are playing from before you make a bet is something that every player should do. After a little practice, it will start to become natural to you.
The first three seats left of the dealer are known as early position at a poker table. This is one of the worst seats on the poker table, and only premium hands should be played when in this position.
While in the early position your opponents may decide to raise or re-raise any bet you may make. You should play your cards and not the player while in this position.
The next four seats labeled in yellow is what are known as middle position. As you can, see they have position over the red seats, but the seats in blue still have position over them. You can play a few more hands when seating in middle position because you only have a few more players that need to act.
Playing in late position gives you the most strength. Here you can play more hands and try to push the other players off their cards. You can often scare other players off their cards if they don’t hit the flop or hit a low pair. You will also get to see all the bet’s of the other players allowing you to make a judgment about the strength of their hands.
Remember that you want to play more hands in late position than middle or early. This will help you improve your win rate over the long run.
