Is Online Poker Legal in Louisiana?
Louisiana has always loved a bit of gambling as a state. Lotteries have been run here since the 1800’s and betting on racing since the 1900s. Nowadays there are a number of commercial casinos around the around which cater for the residents of the state, and to be honest, the laws here aren’t as harsh as some of the other states around. Let’s take a little look at the legislation in this state.
One of the first things to mention is of course what Louisiana defines as betting. That can be found is this rather wordy piece of legislation here:
The intention conducting, or directly assisting in the conducting, as a business, of any game, contest, lottery, or contrivance whereby a person risks the loss of anything of value in order to realize a profit.
Basically speaking, this can cover almost any game of chance or skill, which means that it is an incredibly broad definition compared to some other states which require an element of chance which can include skill, but makes no distinction between the two of them.
The penalties for playing in an unregulated location are particularly severe, although players don’t really have too much to worry about, the legislation is mainly in place to target those who run illegal gambling operations within Louisiana, which means that the majority of the charges in recent years have been targeted at those who fall into this particular bracket.
There are a number of casinos which operate within the state of Louisiana. This includes tribal casinos, commercial casinos and some riverboat casinos.
Casinos and Live Poker
There are a number of different places to gamble and play live poker within Louisiana. In fact, most people should be fairly well catered for when it comes to this. There are a number of tribal casinos as well as commercial ventures which offer the same amount of options as you would normally find in a ‘Las Vegas’ style casino.
Louisiana is one of the few states which makes everything easy for those that are looking to get involved in private poker games. Everybody is allowed to play them, however, you need to be over the age of 21, the game needs to take place within a private residence and there can be no fee charged by the person running the game at all!
In recent years, two pieces of legislation have been passed which pretty much put the nail in the coffin of being able to play poker online in Louisiana. In short, it isn’t allowed!
To be honest, since legislation has only just been introduced with outlaws online gambling in the state of Louisiana, it is unlikely that we are going to see change here any time soon. The problem is, the government of Louisiana is currently in the frame of mind where they believe that if Online gambling was allowed, it would be almost impossible to regulate, and as they have yet to find any evidence to the contrary, this is exactly what they are sticking to!
